… Over the last 10 years, girls and women’s hockey participation has increased by 34 percent, according to USA Hockey. Last season, more girls and women were playing hockey than ever, 83,000 in total. Still, the process of providing equal opportunities for girls and boys in hockey is still in its infancy. Girls on the Polar Bears, who practice at Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh, say they are grateful to be growing up in an era that believes in their potential to compete in sports that have been male-dominated. But they admit there remains a dearth of exposure for professional women’s hockey players on television.
